I created a complete brand identity and marketing campaign for Dragon Delight, a fantasy-themed food truck specializing in spicy Asian cuisine. The project included logo design, vehicle wrap, menu, packaging, uniforms, print advertising, and social media marketing, all unified through a cohesive visual identity inspired by Dungeons & Dragons and spicy food culture.

The Assignment

For this coursework project, I was tasked with developing, branding, and marketing a food truck centered around a cuisine of my choice. I quickly settled on the name Dragon Delight, but initially struggled to determine the type of food the brand would offer. To gather input, I surveyed family, friends, and coworkers. Based on their feedback, I decided to create an Asian-inspired food truck specializing in spicy noodle dishes. The project required the development of a cohesive brand identity and marketing campaign and included the following requirements:

  • Timeline: 8-week time limit
  • Deliverables:
    • Logo
    • Loyalty Card
    • Food Truck Wrap
    • Menu
    • Employee Uniform
    • Package Designs
    • Magazine Ads
    • Social Media Campaign
  • Demonstrate these skills:
    • Knowledge of what is required to brand a business
    • Design consistency across a brand
    • Present work and gather critiques from others.

Research & Discovery

Audience Research

Age: 18-34

I began by researching potential target audiences and defining the demographic I wanted the brand to attract. As a longtime Dungeons & Dragons fan, I chose to integrate themes and visual elements from the game into the concept. This not only made the project more personally meaningful but also helped differentiate the brand and expand its appeal to a wider audience.

Age GroupInterest in Spicy Food
18-24Very High
25-34Highest
35-44High
45-54Moderate-High
55-64Moderate
65+Lowest

My research indicated that individuals aged 25 to 34 are the demographic most likely to enjoy spicy food, with the 18-to-24 age group ranking a close second. As a result, I identified adults aged 18 to 34 as the brand’s primary target audience.

Gender: Any

My research also revealed several differences in how consumers engage with spicy foods.

  • Men tend to respond to:
    • Extreme heat
    • Hot sauce challenges
    • Competitive spice experiences
  • Women often respond more to:
    • Flavor complexity
    • Culinary Exploration
    • International Cuisines
    • Balanced heat rather than pure intensity.

While these trends provided useful insights for developing the brand and marketing strategy, I was unable to locate reliable data regarding preferences among individuals who identify outside the male–female gender binary. As a result, this aspect of the research was not represented in my findings.

Competition

Existing Food Trucks

I decided to do a broad search of existing food trucks in my area that serve spicy asian cuisine. I found several competitors, including:

Fantasy or Dungeons and Dragons Themed Restaurants

I searched my area and was surprised to find very few restaurants that were fantasy- or Dungeons & Dragons-themed. I did find some that could be considered part of that theme:

  • The Arcane Rune
  • The Five Alls
  • Mystique Dining
  • Thieves Guild Cidery

There aren’t very many restaurants that fit a fantasy theme.

Inspiration

Color

I wanted to integrate colors that people associate with hot or spicy foods as well as elements from Dungeons & Dragons that would represent the different heat levels my brand would provide.

I selected a range of reds and a bright yellow as the majority of the brand colors. Then I selected colors based on the chromatic dragons from D&D, matching each color to a heat level.

Typography

For the typography, I wanted to select typefaces that evoked the expressive quality of brush strokes. I have always been fascinated by the precision and artistry found in traditional Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, and I wanted to incorporate that influence into the brand’s visual identity. After exploring several options, I selected two free fonts, Appo Paint and WC Mano Negra BTA, which capture the desired hand-painted aesthetic while maintaining strong readability across various applications.

Throughout most of the project, I relied primarily on Appo Paint because it offered the best balance between the desired brushstroke aesthetic and readability. To establish emphasis and visual hierarchy, I used color variations rather than introducing additional typefaces. WC Mano Negra BTA was reserved for select applications where a more expressive treatment was appropriate, such as the #FeedYourInnerFire tagline featured in the social media campaign. This approach helped maintain visual consistency while allowing key elements to stand out.

Design Process

Logo Exploration

I began the logo design process by sketching as many concepts as possible. Although these initial sketches were rough and often messy, they played an important role in exploring different creative directions and refining my ideas. This iterative process allowed me to evaluate a wide range of concepts, identify what worked well, and eliminate options that did not align with the brand’s personality and goals. While many of the concepts showed potential, only a select few effectively captured the identity of Dragon Delight and its blend of spicy Asian cuisine and fantasy-inspired themes.

After evaluating the initial concepts, I selected the eighth sketch because of its simplicity, clarity, and strong alignment with the brand’s identity. The design effectively captured the fantasy-inspired theme while remaining versatile and recognizable. I then imported the sketch into Procreate, where I refined the concept and developed a more polished version. Once the design was finalized, I transferred it to Adobe Illustrator to create a scalable vector logo suitable for both print and digital applications.

After developing a rough concept, I felt the design needed greater contrast and detail to achieve a more professional appearance.

I refined the original logo by reducing its height and bringing the proportions closer to a square, creating a more balanced and versatile mark. I also exaggerated the curvature of the dragon shape to enhance the sense of movement and energy. To help the logo stand out from surrounding elements, I introduced an offset painterly brush stroke behind the mark. The effect added depth and personality to the design, and it became a defining element that I carried forward through each iteration.

In the second iteration, I incorporated chopsticks to fill the negative space and further reinforce the food-related theme. However, after presenting the design for critique, most of my peers felt that the chopsticks made the logo feel crowded and introduced unnecessary detail. Based on that feedback, I removed the element in the final version. Looking back, I agree that the simplified design feels cleaner, more readable, and more effective.

I also refined the typography by replacing the pure black text with a darker tone pulled directly from the brand’s color palette as well as adjusting the white border to the off-white from the palette. This subtle adjustment helped unify the logo components and created a more cohesive, balanced final design.

After finalizing the logo, I designed two black-and-white variations to support a wider range of print and digital applications. These versions enhance visibility and contrast while maintaining the logo’s recognizability and brand consistency.

Applications

Loyalty Cards

For the loyalty cards, I developed a scale-inspired pattern using randomly colored, repeating scales to create a dynamic and visually engaging design. Because the original colored logo did not provide sufficient contrast against the background, I opted for the white version, which improved legibility and created a stronger visual focal point. On the reverse side, I designed a simple illustration that reinforces the Dungeons & Dragons theme. I also created five unique collectible scales, each corresponding to a different heat level. Customers receive a scale with every purchase, regardless of the heat level selected. After collecting four scales through four meal purchases, customers can redeem their card for a free fifth meal.

Food Truck Wrap

For the food truck wrap, I reused the repeating scale pattern to create the illusion that the vehicle itself is a dragon. This helped establish a strong visual connection to the brand while providing a cohesive design that could be applied seamlessly across the truck’s surface. I also strategically positioned the logo on multiple sides of the vehicle to maximize visibility and brand recognition, ensuring that customers could easily identify the business from nearly any viewing angle.

Menu

For the menu design, I chose to use simple illustrations to represent the main food categories rather than photographs of individual menu items. This approach allowed me to keep the layout clean and compact while maintaining readability and visual consistency with the overall brand. To improve usability, I included symbols next to items that allow customers to customize their spice level. I also incorporated a color-coded heat scale to indicate the available spice levels, ranging from one for the mildest option to five for the hottest. This visual system enables customers to quickly understand and select their preferred level of heat.

Employee Uniforms

For the employee uniform, I opted for a simple design featuring red fabric to align with the brand’s bold and energetic identity. I applied the white version of the logo to the back of the shirt and the front of the cap to maximize visibility and maintain brand consistency. To add a touch of personality and reinforce the fantasy-inspired theme, I designed the front of the shirt to create the illusion of a small dragon tail poking out from the employee’s chest pocket. This subtle detail adds visual interest while helping to strengthen the connection between the brand and its Dungeons & Dragons influences.

Packaging

After finalizing the uniforms, I moved on to the packaging design. I created two takeout box variations and a soup container, ensuring that each package maintained a consistent visual connection to the overall brand. To achieve this, I incorporated the repeating scale pattern across all three items and applied the logo where appropriate. For the handled takeout box, I introduced an additional textured element designed to resemble noodles, adding visual interest and helping to differentiate it from the other packaging options. These details helped create a cohesive packaging system while giving each item its own distinct character.

Marketing

Magazine and Print Ads

For the marketing campaign, I was tasked with designing three magazine advertisements in different formats: a full-page ad, a half-page ad, and a double-truck spread. Each advertisement was designed to reinforce the brand’s fantasy-inspired identity while promoting customer engagement.

For the full-page advertisement, I drew inspiration from traditional tavern job boards commonly found in fantasy settings. The ad presents customers with a challenge to visit the food truck, creating an interactive and immersive connection to the brand.

For the half-page advertisement, I took a more minimalist approach by reusing the scale pattern alongside a dragon head symbol and the tagline, Accept the Challenge. This simplified design allowed the message to remain bold and impactful within a smaller format.

For the double-truck spread, I created a dramatic scene featuring a dragon within a cave accompanied by the cryptic warning, Here There Be Dragons. This attention-grabbing visual was designed to spark curiosity and encourage readers to engage with the advertisement and learn more about the brand.

To maintain consistency and strengthen brand recognition, I included the Dragon Delight logo and website address on each advertisement, with the exception of the half-page ad, where space constraints required a more streamlined design.

Social Media Posts

I was tasked with creating a social media campaign for two different social media platforms. I selected Facebook and Instagram as my two social media platforms.

Instagram CTA Posts

I created an Instagram engagement campaign that invited customers to share photos of what inspires them or fuels their inner fire. Weekly winners received a free entrée, encouraging participation and user-generated content. To support the campaign, I designed three themed promotional posts that increased brand visibility and customer engagement.

Facebook

I created Facebook campaigns focused on promoting sales and special events to potential customers. The campaigns were designed to expand audience reach, generate interest in the business, and encourage customer participation.

Reflection

This project challenged me to think beyond creating individual design pieces and instead develop a complete brand experience. Through audience research, concept development, and multiple rounds of iteration, I created a cohesive identity that successfully combined fantasy-inspired storytelling with the bold personality of a spicy noodle food truck. The feedback I received throughout the process was invaluable, particularly during logo development, where simplifying the design ultimately led to a stronger final solution. If I were to continue developing the brand, I would focus on additional user testing and creating more comprehensive brand guidelines. Overall, this project strengthened my skills in branding, visual identity design, and designing consistent experiences across multiple customer touchpoints.
