Project Overview
I was tasked with creating a motion graphics animation for Chameleon Colors, a color powder company that specializes in bringing color to events and celebrations. The company wanted a short video hook that could capture attention in its online advertising.
The concept featured a series of colorful powder explosions. One by one, the explosions would reveal the Chameleon Colors swirl through the negative space left behind by the powder.
Creating the effect presented an interesting challenge. I needed to produce realistic powder movement while maintaining control over the color, timing, and branding of the final animation.
My solution was a hybrid workflow combining Blender for motion graphics simulations with Adobe After Effects for compositing and animation.
The Motion Graphics Challenge
My original plan was to create the entire animation in Adobe After Effects using Trapcode Particular. However, accessing the plugin required purchasing a Red Giant subscription, which wasn’t practical for the scope and budget of this project.
That left me with an important question:
How could I create professional motion graphics that looked like exploding color powder without relying on an expensive third-party plugin?
I researched several After Effects techniques, but many tutorials either relied on paid plugins or demonstrated outdated workflows.
Rather than simplify the client’s concept around the limitations of my existing tools, I started researching alternative ways to create the animation.
Using Blender for Motion Graphics
My research eventually led me to Blender.
I had experimented with Blender before, but I had never seriously considered incorporating it into my motion graphics workflow. Most of my previous animation work had been created with Adobe After Effects.
However, Blender offered something that After Effects couldn’t easily provide with its native tools: a powerful simulation system capable of producing smoke, dust, and fluid effects without additional paid software.
I began learning the Blender interface before moving into Mantaflow, Blender’s built-in fluid simulation system.

Learning a new program in the middle of a project was challenging, but it allowed me to develop a completely different approach to the animation.
Creating the Powder Animation in Blender
Once I understood the basics of Blender and Mantaflow, I began developing the colored powder effect.
I created a simulation that produced the initial explosive movement of the powder. From there, I experimented with the settings until the speed, density, and movement began to resemble the lightweight color powder used by Chameleon Colors.
I then created a second simulation with softer and more lingering movement.
Combining these simulations helped represent two characteristics of airborne powder: the force of the initial explosion and the lighter dust that remains suspended afterward.
Instead of completing the entire motion graphics animation in Blender, I decided to use Blender specifically for the simulated elements.
I baked the simulations and rendered them with transparent backgrounds so I could bring them into Adobe After Effects for compositing.
Combining Blender and After Effects
After completing the simulations in Blender, I imported the rendered footage into Adobe After Effects.
This created a hybrid motion graphics workflow where each program handled the part of the animation it was best suited for.
Blender handled the powder simulation, while After Effects handled the compositing, color, timing, and final animation.
Inside After Effects, I layered the different powder simulations to create additional depth. I also increased the contrast to strengthen the highlights and shadows within the powder.
Next, I animated the opacity and adjusted the timing of the simulations. This helped create the illusion that the powder particles were naturally dispersing into the surrounding air instead of simply fading away.
Adding Color and Branding to the Animation
Rather than rendering every color variation individually in Blender, I created a neutral powder simulation and handled the final color treatment inside After Effects.
This gave me much greater flexibility.
I created a precomposition for the powder explosion and used Tint and Four-Color Gradient effects to produce different color variations. These colors were based on the powder options offered by Chameleon Colors as well as colors found within the company’s existing branding.
Using this approach meant I could quickly adjust the color of the animation without rerunning the Blender simulation.
It also made the motion graphics easier to adapt if additional color variations were needed later.
Building the Final Motion Graphics Animation
Once the individual powder effects were complete, I assembled everything into the final composition.
Each explosion was timed to reveal portions of the Chameleon Colors swirl through the negative space created by the powder.
The combination of colorful explosions, layered simulations, and carefully adjusted animation timing helped create the energetic feeling the concept required.
The final piece combined Blender animation with After Effects compositing to create a colorful advertising hook that reflected both the client’s product and visual identity.
The Final Result
The finished motion graphics animation delivered the powder-explosion concept requested by Chameleon Colors without requiring expensive third-party particle plugins.
More importantly, the project helped me develop a new workflow for combining Blender and After Effects.
Instead of treating Blender and After Effects as competing animation programs, I learned how the two could complement one another.
Blender provided the complex simulated movement, while After Effects gave me precise control over the timing, color, compositing, and branding of the final animation.
This workflow allowed me to create an effect that would have been much more difficult to produce efficiently using either program alone.
What I Learned About Blender and Motion Graphics
One of my biggest takeaways from this project was learning how useful Blender can be for motion graphics.
Before this project, I primarily associated Blender with 3D modeling and traditional 3D animation. Working with Mantaflow showed me how Blender’s simulation tools could also become part of a larger motion design workflow.
The project strengthened my skills in Blender simulations, Adobe After Effects compositing, animation timing, color treatment, and multi-software production workflows.
It also reinforced an important lesson about creative problem-solving.
When my original approach became impractical, I could have simplified the client’s concept to fit the tools I already knew. Instead, I researched alternatives, learned new software, experimented with an unfamiliar simulation system, and incorporated it into my existing motion graphics workflow.
That experience has given me another tool I can use for future animation and motion graphics projects, especially when creating smoke, dust, particles, atmospheric effects, and other simulated elements.
